Your Name: Mark “DJ Smiley” Smith
How long have you been DJing:Ive been DJing for about 7 good years, but been on the mic for about 10years as a hype man for the clubs overseas when I first came in the Navy.
Who are some of your influences: I really do not have no one that influences me because most DJ's have there on ways and style, But I do have a mentor that been with me for the ride and I look up to him like a brother and a teacher. He been in the game over 20 years and I thank him for the advice, That’s my boy DJ BAMBAM from 92.7 Beat. Another DJ who is down to earth and do not let his skills get to his head but show it on the turntables.
You consider your style more: My style is more of getting the club jumping on new and old school, People forget where most of the newer music come from this days. I'm one of those DJs that gets on the floor and can rock with the people while the music going and then come back mixing. The crowd like that in me i'm not one of those DJ's That let me head go to me when I know i'm the shit in the club and can talk to other DJ's when they in your club. Most DJ's fear another DJ when they step in there booth. I'm laid back and enjoy hear other DJ's play. Like I said all DJ'S have different styles.
Where are you from: I'm from a small town in Union, South Carolina but been in the Navy for about 16 years so i travel.
What market are you in and what is it like: Well i'm more of a mobile DJ, I do clubs. It’s hard in this area where I DJ. No one wants to pay for a good DJ because we have a couple of run down DJ's who gotten old to the people so its hard for me to price the people when they are taking 50 dollar for a five hour show, So I just have to show my skills and prove im worth the money. I DJ in many clubs in Jacksonville, FL and GA. Name of the clubs in Jacksonville,FL were “The Post 197”, “Heros café” and “The Mayport Naval Base Club”. Clubs in Georgia are “The Night Owl” (St Mary’s), “Phat Cats Lounge” (Hinesville) and “The Post 511” (Kingsland).
What can you bring to the GA mixtape game: What I can bring to the mixtape game is breaking newer artist on my mixtapes with some old school song mix while riding out. Not many DJ's want to break newer artist until they break on BET. Not me I will break it out if you get it to me, I feel new artist are like me as a upcoming DJ that want to make it big and get that money. I got the heart and want to make it so I know I can rock any club or mixtape.
What singles are popping off in South Georgia: Right now “Its Goin Down” by Young Joc is popping off in the clubs, hitting the kids and adults hard. When you got a song where the kids rock to it then you know its a hit. If it hitting in the club then you know you got a money maker, If it gets the ladies on the floor you got a money maker. Other joints re peaking through from regional artist Young Cash, Roam and T Rone.
Your close to Jacksonville and Savannah homes of Pure Pain Records, how is your relationship with em: Right now its not a relationship but if they read this let them know I want to be a rep in this area if that want a hot upcoming DJ who going make it. Pure Pain hit a brother up and let me do the job.
Your the only DJ in south Georgia how radio hasn't got wind of you yet: Where far as radio station there not really in my area, But if there was I would be on the radio. I think I could make the people listen adn play the channel all day cause i got that fire and I know I can make people listen.
What stations are in South Georgia: Right now 101.5 out of Jacksonville, and you have 97.9 out of Savannah, then you can sometime pick up HOT 105.7 out of Jacksonville.
Not one of them have contacted you for your market: NO
How do you feel about them not putting you on: Well I do not want to get or be classifed as a radio DJ (mixer), radio DJ's are on a play list, DJs are suppose to play for the crowd and heart, Know when and how to work the crowd is the thing of a club DJ.
What clubs are you doing: Right now no clubs do to management in the clubs are not acting right, so I stick to the moblie and mixtapes so I can everywhere and just somewhere.
What are your next events: Right now my mind is turning so I can not really say but you will hear from me, Upstart Entertainment Record Pool nd DJ Smiley will be coming to a South Georgia town near you really soon. Still looking a venue to restart that South Georgia Hip Hop 1st Fridays, so any spot out there that want South Georgia’s hypest DJ in the house holla and lets make it happen.
Any closing remarks and shout outs: Like i said i'm coming up and it will be a smile when i hit your club. Thanks to Upstart DJ'S,D-WASH, My man DJ BAMBAM, DJ KGB. I just want to say DJ'S come together and stop hating on each ohter. If you need a DJ hit me up and I will give you what you want.
